Do you think the passage of the Volstead Act and the ruling in the Scopes trial represented genuine triumphs for traditional values?
I believe that in the aftermath of WW1 people should have been allowed to drink alcohol. I believe the same as many of the immigrants and the other citizens in that they should be allowed to enjoy life. Prohibition, along with the Volstead acts made it hard for Americans to relax after a had days work for the most part. Secondly, the need for alcohol was so great that many, many people made it illegal, and therefore, breaking the law and putting them in prison. Which was the opposite of what was intended to happen. It was supposedly going to illuminate all forms of violence in every community.
And along with the prohibitions, the city's were getting really crowded. It made it harder for people to find good jobs, because alot were taken by immigrants, and it tensed people up. Making them want a way to relax. Alcohol. The Scopes trial was an odd trial because before that, the onlyones who didnt believe fully in the bible were scientists, and now that it was supposidly outlawed to teach about evolution, and that was plain stupid, in a way that people should be allowed to think freely and think what they, themselves want, but as well as respect the others opinion and beliefes. So all in all, i believe that the passage and the trial were not genuine triumphs for traditional values, because they pushed the other values down forcfully, and dont allow them to even be considered.
