1. What are some of the main reasons that the federal government's policy of assimilation failed?
Some of the main reasons it fiald in my opion is that it was a stupid plan in the first place.
Soma actual reason why it failed was because the Native Americans way of life was so much differnt than ours, and it would be nearly impossible to change it. The cultures are also extreamly differnt in how the whites believe that to be civilized they need to own materail thingslike land, whil ethe Native Americans had no need to own land, because they moved around according to the seasons. Another big reason why this wouldnt work is because the general attitude towords Natives is they are savage and stupid. And the goverment promised the Natives money and other things which the natives never got even to look at.
2. How successful were government efforts to promote settlement of the Great Plains? Give examples to support your answer.
The grouth on settlement it the great planes exploded with people rushing for land they could own. In the way that the goverment gave it away really promoted settlement in the great plains. Railroads mad a big difference in how the settlers could get to the west quick and cheap ready to get some land. It also allowed the merchants expaind there area of selling thier goods. The Homestead Act offered up 160 acres of land [free] to anyoneor who had a family and eager to work on the land. And many peopl ejumped on the offer and the land was all takin instantly. This also promoted settlement groth because it was free.
