1. Southern and Eastern Europeans were immagrating because they wanted to get away from religious persicution in their homeland. The Chinese and Japanese immagrated because they wanted to make livings and get rich by mining for gold, and then building railways. They later turned to farming and agriculture. Koreans immagrated to America for the same reasons the Chinese and Japanese came here. They wanted to get rich.
2. The journey immigrants took were mainly by steamship and were unconfaorable and deadly for some. They were in cramped spaces and desease often spread quicly from one to another, killing few before they even saw America. Many on the East Coast came to Ellis Island then, and alot still do today. At Ellis Island, many were detained for a day or two, so the inspectores could inspect then. Only anout 2% were ever denied entry into the U.S. The examination included a physical, and inspection of documents (i.e. birth certificate and passport). This took about 5 hours on average. The same inspections were performed, but much more intense, on Angle Island on the West Coast.
